How Can Web 2.0 work for Nonprofits?

What is Web 2.0?  It’s the second generation of internet tools that facilitate interactive communication.  It’s about collaboration and information sharing: Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Flickr.  Lists and bookmarking sites.  All nonprofits need to have an online presence but simply maintaining a website is one-way communication.  Social media is networking — two-way communication.

How can you make the most of the tools available when technology is changing so quickly? Find out what your volunteers, board members and clients are using.   At a minimum, start with a blog and share what you’re learning as you do your work in the community so others can comment and learn.  Create a fan page for your organization on Facebook  and ask your board members and volunteers to join it and talk about the good work you’re doing, who you’re helping, why you’re needed in the community.   Open a Twitter account and start tweeting about your organization’s projects and events and share information about what you’re doing.  The benefit of Twitter is sharing new information quickly and easily with others who are interested in those topics, too.  And they want to know what you’re doing.  Now.  Social networking can help you spread the word quickly and build connections to supporters.

“Nonprofit organizations can use the Internet to cultivate and enhance public education and outreach, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and retention, staff training, publicity, fundraising, community building, opinion sampling, fundraising, interactive and personalized relationships, and fundraising. Web 2.0 tools can further help nonprofit organizations engage and mobilize people in support of their missions.”  –from Nonprofit Resource Center’s page on Web 2.0.
